Causes of Neck Pain
JULY 8, 2021
Hello, everyone, it's Dr. Aaron Seaton with The Chiropractic Place. I wanted to talk to you guys today about the top three reasons that I see people with neck pain in my office. Most of the time people are coming in, there can be a variety of things that are contributing to it. Some of the times, it's a combination of all three. But a lot of times, people, they have neck pain, maybe they're having trouble sleeping, they could be experiencing headaches associated with that neck pain, but here are the top three reasons that I see people for neck pain in my office.
Number one, old injuries. So this is really common where somebody had maybe an old whiplash injury or maybe an old football injury to their neck, and it's created neck pain over time. Typically if that injury wasn't treated properly, those people are gonna start experiencing neck pain down the line. Something we see with whiplash and stuff like that is a chronic pain and chronic whiplash 12-18 months later, sometimes it could be even five-plus years later, if that injury isn't properly treated.
The number two reason that people come in for neck pain, poor posture. Maybe it's that you're at a desk a lot of the time, or there are just some unhealthy ergonomic habits of not sitting properly, not getting up and taking the breaks that you need, that's a really common cause for neck pain. And the number one thing that we see in our offices, and this is what chiropractors treat in their office, is something we call subluxation. Subluxation is a chiropractic term which is saying that a bone and a joint is not moving properly, it's not in its proper alignment, and it's creating some kind of nerve disturbance or nerve interference in your body. And when you see subluxations, that can not only cause the pain in your neck, it could be affecting nerve flow to whatever part of your body that we find that subluxation. So that's a very important thing.
A lot of the time, it's a combination of all of these. That's why we do a detailed history with our patients, to try to better understand what's been going on. We document old injuries that they have, if they sit a lot, what kind of postural issues they might have. And then obviously, as a chiropractor, I'm looking for this right here, subluxation, what is out of alignment, causing pressure on your nerve system affecting your body. So this is why in our office, you guys, detailed history, we do X-rays on our patients, especially when there's chronic, long-term stuff going on, we wanna better understand what's going on with your body so that we can give you what you're looking for. And a lot of times patients who come to our office with neck pain, they start experiencing obviously less neck pain, or we get rid of that neck pain, improvement in headaches, better sleep, they feel better posturally, more energy.
There's a lot of side benefits to getting adjusted in dealing with that. Maybe neck pain is what brings you in, but subluxation, when bones are out of place, putting pressure on your nerve system. Your nerve system controls everything in your body, so when we start making positive changes to that, that starts allowing your nerve system to function at a much higher level. So there's a number of benefits that you receive even when you're coming in for just having neck pain and you wanna deal with that, other things that we start to see also improve.
