Ways to Relieve Low Back Pain

Hello, everyone, I'm Dr. Aaron Seaton with The Chiropractic Place here in Redding, California. And I wanted to talk to you today about the number one reason people come in to the chiropractor is still for low back pain. There's a lot of causes for low back pain. You can have... Say, you were doing some gardening or landscaping, and you pick something up too many times, and your back starts to go out, you hear that a lot in the office, patients picking up, lifting, or sometimes doing things that their body may not be accustomed to, and that can trigger the low back pain. We also have people who have had chronic low back pain, they have these flare-ups every so often, and they're coming in to the chiropractor finally 'cause maybe they're sick and tired of dealing with that.
There's a number of steps we like to go through at The Chiropractic Place that we like to look for in our patients with low back pain. The first thing that I'm thinking is, what's the cause of that problem? What is causing this issue? Is there something underlying that is causing these frequent flare-ups for that patient, or is there something that we need to know about their spine before we get started with the course of care? In our office, we do a consultation, we do an exam. We also take digital x-rays right here in our office, and all of that first visit still includes your first adjustment, and that's only $75. We like to provide a lot of value to our clients and get them some answers on exactly why are we having these issues. And the second thing we do after we address that is try to develop a course of care specific to that patient's needs. Sometimes that can be a couple of times a week for a few weeks, to get them out of the woods, so to speak, get that flare-up down, and in that way we can get them feeling better and then move into another phase of care.
And then we look at the contributing factors as well with our patients. Sometimes if we're overweight, any of our weightbearing joints are gonna be affected. You're far more likely to have knee pain, hip pain, and low back pain in weightbearing joints if you're overweight. So that could be something that we discuss with our patients, letting them know there are options for them on that. And then there are other contributing factors, like things in the spine. Is there something that formed when you were born in the spine that you were unaware of? That's where these x-rays for treating low back pain can be very effective, at letting us know is there something that we need to address specific to that patient to get them on the road to recovery and get them better.
Other contributing factors for low back pain, and most people are probably aware of this, core strength and stability. That's a huge one for long-term prevention of back problems, is addressing any core weakness issues that may be there. So, once our patients are feeling better, we usually wanna get our patients out of the woods first, so to speak, get them out of that acute phase. Nobody wants to do crunches when they're a nine out of 10 pain, and it, quite frankly, be counter-productive. There's no point to doing that until we can get that pain level down, get that person back to a level of function, and then we can start to introduce more of our long-term plan, long-term goals, which would be core strength and stability, any weight loss that needs to happen, but also letting them know that you have a responsibility to your spine, to your low back, to take care of it consistently.
One of the things that a lot of patients do with chiropractic is they'll come in when they're having a problem, they'll utilize chiropractic care, and then once the pain is gone, they don't come back. So we like to spend a little time educating our patients that, "Hey, once we get you feeling better and your spine functioning properly, long term, you should look at your spine the same way you look at your teeth". I go to the dentist for preventative maintenance, I brush my teeth, I floss, use mouthwash twice a day, and then I go to my dentist every three to six months for my check-up and my cleaning to prevent long-term damage to my teeth.
The same is true for chiropractic care for your spine, especially when dealing with your low back. If you lift a lot, you wanna prevent those problems from developing, because if we don't, we're leaving that to chance and over time your spine can wear out. We like to obviously get people through that first phase, educate them about that spinal health, and then take care of them.
