Importance of Stimulating Muscle

Hello everyone, this is Dr. Aaron Seaton with the Chiropractic Place, we're doing another video today on the importance of stimulating muscle. So this is great, when we have patients that have had like a whiplash injury, they've had the neck pain, the upper back pain from a whiplash injury, we get them through a series of visits where we're doing possibly massage therapy, chiropractic care, but there comes a time and a place to really stimulate that muscle to strengthen, to protect that spine. We can also see this with patients that have chronic low back pain, lots of flare-ups throughout the year, and this is a discussion I like to have with my patients because it really helps them understand how important their effort is in stabilizing their spine and getting it stronger. So this is a good thing to know about muscle is that muscle has actually a half-life of roughly 6 to 10 days. So if you're sedentary or not stimulating muscle, in six to 10 days, that muscle is halfway gone, is what that means. So this is hopefully a good understanding for people that, it doesn't take very long for muscle to atrophy and become weak, and muscles are what help protect our spine, help move our spine and stabilize our spine.
So when you're under chiropractic care, if you wanna see things speed up when your chiropractor gives you certain spinal exercises to do to help stabilize, that is designed to help improve your care and improve your outcome. So I love this little piece of science here, just so it kind of illustrates for patients, when you're having neck pain or upper back pain, maybe you've had a car accident, or if you're experiencing chronic low back pain, we have to eventually have a discussion about the muscles that protect that area of your spine and what you're doing to strengthen them and keep them strong. A lot of people know, it's pretty much common knowledge now, if you're having low back pain, if you have weak core muscles, that is a definite contributing factor to having chronic low back pain or recurring low back pain. So this is very important because the exercise does nothing but complement your chiropractic care. It doesn't replace it, right? You still need your chiropractic care, and chiropractic certainly does not replace exercise, you still need to exercise. And the people who are doing both, usually get the best outcomes and they have the least amount of pain, whether that's from a car accident or just low back pain, these are the people who do this consistently to have the best outcomes possible when under chiropractic care.
So hopefully, this makes sense to you. Hopefully, understanding how quickly muscle can go away, and we had an old saying in chiropractic college, what you abuse, you lose, and what you don't use, you lose. And that is very true with muscle, if we don't use our muscles and stimulate them to be strong, we lose them. And if we lose them, when in the case of the spine, if you lose the muscles around the spine, you will start to put more stress on the joints and the ligaments of the spine, and they will wear out faster.
