Chiropractic: Symptom Relief vs Wellness Care
APR 19, 2022
Hello everyone, this is Dr. Aaron Seaton with The Chiropractic Place here in Redding, California. Today's video is about chiropractic symptom relief versus wellness care. Some people only want to come in for symptoms and that's okay. Some patients we have, or ongoing wellness care, are helping to maintain their spine, so I thought today, this would be a great video because it helps if people understand... Some people have never been exposed to the idea of why would you go to the chiropractor on a regular basis? So we do get a lot of patients who come in when they have flare-ups, neck pain, back pain, headaches, and obviously we work very hard to take care of those patients and to get them that symptom relief and get their pain down, so we can get them to a much more manageable state. Still, along the way, we always try to educate our patients about the need for ongoing spinal care, and ongoing chiropractic care. So I wanted to do a video about giving some examples of just what I see every day. Sometimes I have patients come in and they're in this category, right, they're coming in 'cause they're in pain and need help.
Maybe they did something and their back flared up, and then we'll take X-rays on them, and I show them in their low back that they've had degenerative arthritis in their spine, wear and tear building up for probably 20 years, and then you ask that patient, "Well, how long has your back hurt?" "Well, I haven't really had too many back problems, but for the last week, it's been really bad ever since I did gardening." Well, the reality is, their spine has been wearing out for years and they had no symptoms, so the only time they became aware of this is when they had a flare-up, and that's because we've been educated, a lot of people have been educated that the only time to think about going to the chiropractor is when you're in this phase, which is symptom relief, and no doubt, I get a lot of patients that are in that when they come here, and like I said, we work really hard to take care of those patients. However, it's my job to educate my patients on their need to continue to take care of their spine. Your dentist doesn't only want to see you when you have a massive cavity as you go to the dentist and as my tooth hurts, it's really bad. They look in there and they find a cavity. They'll probably tell you what I just told you about chiropractic, which is, oh my gosh, you have a bad cavity.
This has been going on for a while. Well, my tooth only started hurting three days ago. Is that cavity only three days old? No, that cavity has been building up probably for months to where it got bad. Your dentist doesn't want to just see you based on symptoms. Your dentist wants to see you to take care of your teeth, to prevent unnecessary wear and tear to your teeth because it's much harder if you start losing teeth to take care of yourself. The same is true with chiropractic, you have one spine. It's really a lot harder for us to do a good job for you if your spine has decades of wear and tear on it before you come to the chiropractor, so hopefully, this video makes sense of the differences between symptom relief and wellness care and why you want to go to the chiropractor.
Obviously, if you're in this category right now, give us a call, come in, and we're going to take care of you. Nobody wants to talk about this when they're in 10 out of 10 pain, but let's get you out of the woods here, get you feeling better. Hopefully, with our digital x-ray system and the exam that we do, we can help you better understand what your long-term chiropractic care needs are that way, we're not only seeing you when you have massive pain because what I have found with those patients that only come in for symptom relief, over time, those flare-ups are more frequent. Those flare-ups get worse, meaning they have worse pain, and it takes longer and longer to get that flare-up under control. Usually after about two or three of those episodes, the patients who were here, start to ask the doc, what do I need to do? I need to be taking care of myself regularly. So we go over that with them, so if you have any questions about chiropractic care versus symptom relief versus wellness care, or any chiropractic questions, give our office a call.
We're happy to talk to you. I'm Dr. Aaron Seaton with The Chiropractic Place.
