Why does sugar lower immunity?

Sugar increases the production of inflammatory proteins in your body which suppresses immune function.

Is sugar inherently bad?

Sugar is not inherently bad. Too much sugar is the problem. Having sugar all the time leads to dental decay, diabetes, weight gain and/or obesity, and several other health problems. A diet that emphasizes healthy proteins, healthy fats, vegetables, fruits, and carbohydrates from healthy sources such as brown rice, sweet potatoes, and whole grains is the best way to reduce your sugar intake.

Hello everyone, it's Dr. Aaron Seaton again with The Chiropractic Place. We're doing a video again about the immune system, specifically this one about sugar and its effects on the immune system. Many people have probably already heard that sugar can suppress the immune system, so we wanted to do a video on it to discuss ways to improve your immune health and really hone in on this topic because this is definitely something that goes in. It goes on in our country, where there's too much sugar consumption and too much consumption of processed foods containing lots of sugar. It doesn't take much if you keep doing this repeatedly to have a chronically suppressed immune system, meaning your immune system is not going to function at the level you want it to keep you healthy. The immune system doesn't just work if you have an infection. The immune system does a whole bunch of stuff in your body to help you repair, and remove damaged cells and all kinds of stuff, so the immune system is very important to the regular maintenance of our health. So things that we know, we know too much sugar is going to suppress your immune system, things that are processed foods, we wanna decrease that in the diet.

So in many patients, I see this with, we need to replace that with something and educate those patients on why this is not healthy long-term, and you have to present solutions. So increasing the consumption of fruits and vegetables, these are things that have fiber, natural vitamins, minerals, antioxidants in them that will boost our health, boost our immune function, and especially the vegetables. Vegetables have, especially green vegetables like broccoli, and kale, these things have eight to nine times more fiber than a high fiber piece of bread.

Fruits typically have two to three times more fiber than those high-fiber bread always advertised. So these are very important, not only do they have lots of good fiber, which will help with our digestion. It'll help slow down our digestion and help us absorb nutrients better because things aren't just rushing right through our digestive system, but fruits and vegetables also have again, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to help our body and support our immune system. The other thing to remember, a lot of patients, are not drinking enough water and you will actually eat more food if you are dehydrated because there is moisture in food. If you're not used to drinking water, your body is going to seek water where it can find it.

And so I always tell patients, let's work on maybe increasing our water consumption, even 25% improvement to start, because the more water we have, the more hydrated we are, the less hungry we are, and the less we are likely to reach for these types of foods. So hopefully, this brief video just starts you on the right path with understanding how to boost the function of your immune system. These are pretty easy changes to make, you just want to start somewhere and start implementing some attainable goals for yourself when you're trying to shift away from sugar and get that immune system functioning better.
