Chiropractic and Balance

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it typically take for patients to notice improvements in balance and coordination after starting regular chiropractic care?

Patients typically notice improvements in coordination and balance after 4 weeks of chiropractic care.

Are there specific exercises or lifestyle changes you recommend alongside chiropractic treatments to further enhance balance and prevent falls?

In addition to chiropractic care, it is important for patients to engage in regular exercise. Exercises that utilize balance as part of the routine can be very effective at building muscle and coordination to prevent falls.

In your experience, do you see a difference in outcomes between patients who start chiropractic care at an older age versus those who begin earlier in life?

The sooner a patient starts chiropractic care, the better. Utilizing chiropractic care on an ongoing basis provides the best results. Look at it similar to dental care. Those that start early with dental care and utilize dental care throughout their lives regularly get the best results. Chiropractic care is no different.

Chiropractic And Balance

Hello everyone, this is Dr. Aaron Seaton with The Chiropractic Place. Today's video is about chiropractic and balance. There's actually a number of studies that have shown that chiropractic can help improve our balance.

They had a study about four years ago done on elderly patients that showed that chiropractic care can have an impact on their fall risk. It can actually reduce the risks of major falls because what chiropractic care can do is when you get spinal adjustments or adjustments to any of these joints, you are allowing better communication from that joint to your brain. So let me explain that.

Our body has what are called proprio-receptors. Think of them as like position set receptors that tell the brain where the body is in space. You can have relays from muscles, tendons, joints.

So the more you allow for better range of motion in whatever joint we're talking about, better range of motion equals better communication with the brain. It means that these proprio-receptors can talk to your brain about that joint's position and the brain can make better responses to that information, right? Input affects output, meaning your brain to coordinate your movements is relying on information from the muscles and the joints to send them information about where they are so the brain can send control commands back to that area to better move that area. So how does that relate to balance? Well, if you're having poor proprio-reception, meaning your joints and muscles are unable to communicate at a high level, your brain is making decisions based on limited information.

Therefore, you could be at a higher risk for falling if your brain isn't getting the proper amount of information. So basic and simple chiropractic adjustments help joints move properly. It helps restore the best range of motion that you can have.

It breaks up scar tissue in the area, can help decrease inflammation around the joints, especially when you're under ongoing regular chiropractic care. You're preventing a lot of this stuff from happening. And so what is it that we see? We see better outcomes, reduced risk of falls, better coordination in your body.

And I have patients as they've gotten older, they've been seeing me for a long time, that report this to me pretty regularly. That they notice not just, oh I have less fall risk, that they just notice that they're able to do day-to-day tasks better than people their age who are not receiving regular chiropractic care. So chiropractic can have an impact on your balance.

It can have an impact on your coordination and movement. And regular chiropractic care can have the biggest impact on your overall function, keeping you moving properly as you get older. I'm Dr. Aaron Seaton with The Chiropractic Place.
