Car Accidents and Chiropractic Care

Frequently Asked Questions

You mentioned that patients caught by surprise in a car accident are 15 times more likely to suffer from whiplash injuries—what specific signs should someone watch for in the days immediately after an accident to know if they might have sustained this type of trauma?

Sometimes immediate onset of pain does not happen after an accident. A good rule of thumb is any pain that shows up within a few weeks after an accident may be related to the accident.

Can you elaborate on what types of treatments or techniques you use in your office to help prevent scar tissue buildup and long-term issues after a car accident?

After a car accident, it is important to begin care within the first 30 days. In our office, we use a combination of chiropractic care, massage therapy, and at-home stretches and exercises to prevent the buildup of scar tissue and increase our chances of long-term recovery.

For someone who doesn’t feel immediate pain after a car accident, how would you recommend they approach the decision to seek care within the first 30 days?

I would begin care as soon as possible. Whiplash and spinal trauma injuries can occur at around 7 mph. Sometimes there is a delayed onset of symptoms. It is best to begin care early to avoid the risk of long-term complications.

Car Accidents and Chiropractic Care

Hello everybody, this is Dr. Aaron Seaton with The Chiropractic Place. Today's video is about car accidents. Now in my office, I've been doing this for 19 years now.

I've seen a number of auto accident cases over the years, and I've actually taken additional training in whiplash and spinal trauma. I've done hours and hours and hours studying with some of the best and brightest minds in that particular area to learn how to better help people who have had car accidents. So I like to shoot this video today just so that I can give people information because there's a lot of misconceptions out there in the general public about car accidents and what you should do.

One of the things that I've heard so many times is that, oh, you know, I heard if you just go limp, let your body relax, that you're far more likely to have a better outcome. Nothing could be further from the truth in the data. When we've studied this subject, the people who are caught totally by surprise, meaning they don't have time to tense up to protect themselves from the accident, the people who are caught totally by surprise are 15 times more likely to have a whiplash spinal trauma injury than people who see the accident coming and have time to react.

People also in this area who are caught by surprise, 70 to 80% of the people caught by surprise tend to have chronic whiplash injuries down the road. That's important for people to understand. So if you're ever in an accident where you were caught totally by surprise, your chance of having a deeper injury that can become more chronic over time, your chances are much higher if you're in that category.

So I always talk to my patients about this, you know, as far as what to expect, how long will it take for me to get better. If that's one of the factors, we need to factor that in. That could take more time for you to get better when you're caught by surprise.

The other thing I see with patients is patients when they're injured, some of them will, I wanted to wait a few months, let things calm down, I hear that a lot. And the other thing that we've learned in the peer-reviewed studies on this is that the patients that seek care within the first 30 days after an accident have the most successful outcomes of anyone related to whiplash and spinal trauma with a car accident. That is the number one success predictor for somebody's outcome.

Are they going to get better? Is did they seek care in the first 30 days following the accident? So it is important, it's vital, I would say, if you are in a car accident, that you start care as soon as possible because that, getting in there and making sure we keep the spinal joints moving, taking care of any soft tissue injuries, we are preventing scar tissue from setting in and becoming a chronic debilitating problem down the road. So these two things are pretty big misconceptions with the public related to car accidents. So if you're in a car accident, give us a call.

We've been seeing cases like this for 19 years. We know what to do. We'll answer all of your questions and help you better understand what to do moving forward.
